LIVING WITH IT

The lock arrives set to 000. Once you change it, nobody — us included — can recover it. Write it down somewhere that isn't inside the case.

There's no TSA key in the box. There isn't meant to be. Security services carry their own.

It resists rain. It does not defeat rain. A downpour on the walk from the taxi is fine. A night on a balcony is not.

The handle has a little play in it. That's deliberate. It's where the shock goes, instead of into your shoulder.

Aluminium arrives with a mark or two, and collects more. That is the material behaving correctly. It is not a fault and it is the beginning of the record.

The leather grip will darken exactly where your hand goes. Give it a year.

The zip inside the lining is for repairs. Leave it shut and nothing will fall behind it.

Clean it with a damp cloth, dry it before you put it away, and keep it out of direct sun. Never thinner, benzene or petrol — they'll take the finish off.

There's a limit. Overpack it hard enough and you can deform the frame or jam the lock. The case is strong. It is not infinitely strong.

If an airline damages it, the claim is theirs and the clock is seven days. Photograph it at the carousel before you leave the hall — that photograph is the whole claim. Shell damage can't be repaired, and compensation varies by carrier.

Cabin allowances vary by airline and change more often than they announce. Worth a check before you fly.

A little powder may come off the packaging on first handling. A dry cloth sees to it.

Screens lie about colour. Ours are silver, red, cream, black and khaki, and every one of them is better in the room than on the phone.
